Abstract Synopsis

  • The study estimates that in 2023, approximately 96,400 to 105,000 new cancers could result from the 93 million CT scans performed in the US, with children being at higher risk but most cases occurring in adults due to higher scan numbers.
  • The most common radiation-induced cancers are lung, colon, leukemia, and bladder cancer, with lung cancer being the most frequent.
  • Using data from a multicenter sample and radiation dose estimates, the research models future cancer risks based on patient age, sex, and scan type, emphasizing the carcinogenic potential of ionizing radiation from CT imaging.
