The discussions demonstrate a strong consensus that the study is groundbreaking, with phrases like 'groundbreaking' and worries about future welfare indicating high impact, while mentions of 'emotions' and 'moods' reflect genuine interest. The tone varies from scientific enthusiasm to concern for ethical treatment, highlighting both intellectual engagement and emotional investment.
AgreementModerate agreement
Most discussions support the idea that reptiles, like tortoises, experience emotions similar to those of mammals, which aligns with the article's findings.
InterestHigh interest
The majority show high curiosity and enthusiasm about the research, indicating genuine interest in reptile cognition and welfare.
EngagementHigh engagement
Many comments reference the study’s methods and implications, suggesting deep thought and active engagement.
ImpactModerate impact
Users mostly believe this research could significantly influence reptile welfare policies and further scientific investigation, though some recognize it as early evidence rather than definitive proof.
Abstract in brief
The study provides evidence that redfooted tortoises, like mammals and birds, can experience mood states, which can be assessed through cognitive bias tasks and anxiety tests.
Tortoises kept in proper conditions showed an optimistic bias, reaching ambiguous locations faster near rewarded areas, indicating a positive mood.
The findings suggest that reptiles have affective and cognitive capacities similar to other animals, which has important implications for their welfare and understanding their evolutionary development of emotion.
1/3 Las tortugas no solo experimentan emociones, también estados de ánimo
Aunque se han estudiado (poco) las emociones en reptiles, no sabemos nada de si las mantienen en el tiempo como nosotros. Esta es evidencia de que sí lo hacen.

@domdyer70 A recent 2025 study proves chelonians like this guy have emotions like optimism or stress: https://t.co/rPmhth5ayg. A lack of facial expressions leads people to believe they are more like machines. Poor dude :(

@JTrev1977 @domdyer70 No facial expressions makes it hard to know when something is off cognitively, especially for a chelonian thats evolved to sit dead still and ambush prey—but a 2025 study proves that they have moods like optimism or stress: https://t.co/rPmhth5ayg.

I just finished reading this paper and it is groundbreaking. Hopefully a better future for reptile welfare and handling. We are much more similar to our counterparts than people give credit. Everything is much more complex than you think.
