Abstract in brief

A patent foramen ovale (PFO) is a common heart condition found in about 25% of adults, and can lead to paradoxical embolism, which causes about 5% of all strokes, especially in younger individuals.
Approximately 50% of younger patients (under 60) with undetermined stroke causes have a PFO, indicating a higher risk compared to the general population.
The Risk of Paradoxical Embolism (RoPE) score helps assess the likelihood of a PFO causing a stroke, and closure of the PFO has been shown to significantly reduce the risk of recurrent strokes in younger patients with cryptogenic strokes compared to standard medical therapy.
