Abstract in brief
The discovery of a new, more complete specimen of Spicomellus afer confirms it as an ancient ankylosaur with uniquely elaborate dermal armor, indicating early evolution of these armored dinosaurs in the Jurassic period.
Spicomellus had tail vertebrae that suggest it possessed a tail weapon, challenging previous beliefs that such features only appeared in the Cretaceous, thus revealing a more complex evolution of ankylosaur defenses.
The ornate armor of Spicomellus may have served both for display and defense, with later ankylosaurs developing simpler armor possibly to focus more on protection as predation intensified or for display purposes.]

This is just some awesome science. Ankylosaurs in the Jurassic period? With sick spiky armor and a spiky tail? That maybe evolved via sexual selection? Hell yes. Goddamn I needed this so much. www.nature.com/articles/s41...
