Abstract Synopsis

  • The study tested the effectiveness of digitoxin, a cardiac glycoside, in patients with chronic heart failure and reduced ejection fraction compared to a placebo.
  • Over the 36-month trial involving 1,212 patients, those receiving digitoxin experienced a lower rate of death or hospitalization for worsening heart failure.
  • While digitoxin was associated with fewer primary outcome events, it also had a higher incidence of serious adverse events compared to the placebo group.
