Abstract Synopsis
- The study found that reported ADHD persistence rates in adulthood vary significantly depending on the source (parent vs. self-report), the assessment method (rating scales vs. interviews), and the symptom thresholds used (DSM vs. norm-based).
- Using combined parent and self-reports with rating scales and a norm-based threshold provided the best balance between sensitivity and specificity, with about 60% of those diagnosed in childhood still showing symptoms in adulthood.
- Structured interviews are more effective for self-reporting in young adults when parent reports are unavailable, but a combination of multiple reporting methods and thresholds offers the most accurate assessment of ADHD symptom persistence over time.
