Abstract Synopsis

  • Sleep restriction (5 nights with only 4 hours in bed) decreases the rate of muscle protein synthesis in healthy young men, which could contribute to muscle loss.
  • Performing high-intensity interval exercise (HIIE) during sleep restriction helped maintain muscle protein synthesis at normal levels, potentially counteracting muscle loss.
  • The study suggests that HIIE could be an effective way to prevent sleep loss-related decline in muscle health by supporting the body's protein synthesis processes.
