Impact of Resistance Training Proximity to Failure on Muscle Growth

Impact of Resistance Training Proximity to Failure on Muscle Growth

The study examines how proximity to failure affects strength gain and muscle hypertrophy during resistance training. Our analysis indicates that terminating sets closer to failure does not significantly enhance strength gains, but is associated with greater increases in muscle size.

@DeanTTraining While I agree, this is a meta analysis of the literature. So they are pointing towards lower rest times across many studies. Granted we need to take in ecological validity, but it is a pretty strong finding. https://t.co/Y5lcJWzo9L

@DeanTTraining This is a really complicated topic and a recent meta analysis shows that rest times really depend on many factors and may be individualized event to muscle groups. I am curious to see how the research unfolds in this area. https://t.co/Y5lcJWyQkd

How long should you rest during training? It depends on your goal. For muscle growth, resting at least 60 seconds works best. Personally, I use a timer as a guide, but I always listen to my body—resting just enough to properly execute the next set. https://t.co/pLvm1NxKy1

Abstract Synopsis

  • This systematic review and Bayesian meta-analysis examined how different rest interval durations between sets affect muscle growth, using data from studies that controlled most training variables and measured muscle gains in healthy adults.
  • The results showed some evidence that shorter rest periods (around 60 seconds) might promote slightly more muscle hypertrophy, especially in the arms and thighs, possibly due to reduced volume load, but differences were small and varied across studies.
  • Rest intervals longer than about 90 seconds did not show significant additional benefits, suggesting that extending rest beyond this point doesn't further enhance muscle growth, as the negative effects on training volume tend to stabilize.
